Some of my favorite things :)

This has been the best Christmas I've ever had, HANDS DOWN. Normally for Christmas I will buy a bunch of clothes, which is always great for a girl who loves to shop but here lately I have been ALL about cooking. I have grown to really love it and am always looking to try new and different things. One of the things I look forward most to getting married is getting the opportunity to be in the kitchen so much! I try and cook as much as I can on my own, but it's not that easy cooking for just myself.

This year for Christmas I wanted to make an attempt to buy a good amount of kitchen supplies. My latest obsessions have been bakeware and dishes. My favorites have been CorningWare and Paula Deen brands mostly because I love that Southern ridged pattern.
I got this on CorningWare dish I ADORE. One of the special education teachers at school always brought her stews for lunch in this thing and I always found myself eyeballing it wanting one for myself. It's such a fun little toy to have in the kitchen and great to carry with you to work. On the Paula Deen brand, I got some bakeware sets and a measuring cup that is QUITE cute. I like to look in my cabinets and see some color and sass to my bakeware. Although I love cooking entirely, I find my favorite recipes stuff that I bake like casseroles, chicken, lasagna, etc.

Another cooking item I got that I am SO excited about using is this 5 piece mixing bowl set. You can get them at Wal-Mart and Target. If I'm not mistaken I am sure they are under 25 bucks (since I got them as a Dirty Santa present and that is our family spending limit) My friend Chrystal got this set when she got married several years ago and I would always cook with her in her newlywed kitchen. We absolutely loved them, the colors and the nice stoneware sturdiness of them (if that's even a word, if not forgive my lack of vocabulary)

Something else I have grown to be a fan of are glasses. I have no idea why but I absolutely loooove small cups/glasses. I drink out of them so much more than the regular size glasses. I got myself a nice set of scotch glasses (in which my mother calls "juice glasses" because she's not a drinker). I use them to drink water, juice and on occasions blush wines :)

Another obsession I have recently developed is fitness: or in my case yoga, pilates and P90X. I have grown to LOVE working out and actually lost 7 pounds from the P90X program. The holidays have caused me to gain back 2 of those pounds so starting tomorrow it's back to the mat for me. My stepdad, Mike, who is also a fitness fanatic found me this BowFlex heart rate monitor with your calorie count to give me for Christmas. I was SO happy when I opened it up because I know I will use the crap out of this sucker!

Finally, last but NEVER least Matt's parents bought me the 5th season of one of my all time favorite shows... The Golden Girls! I know every man has it in his blood from birth to hate this show and I can not help it, but I just love it. I love all their crazy calamities they get into and the fact that they are old and can still raise the roof just puts a huge smile on my face. Sweet Matt has already bought me two seasons of them and I'm only two away from owning the whole series! They will be in my DVD player for months at a time! LOVE IT!

And that boys and girls...is a few of my favorite things from this years Christmas. ♥

Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas everyone! The Lord's blessed me tremendously this year with gifts and love from my family. This was the first year Matt and I got to actually spend Christmas together, so that was wonderful in itself. :) We got really creative with our gifts for one another: I bought him a pair of Heelys (which his face lit up like a little kid when he opened them--so funny!) and he got me an ASSORTMENT of gift cards from: Victoria's Secret, iTunes, Marshalls, Rue21, Subway, Starbucks and Panera Bread! My favorite places! How fantastic :)

I had many more family get togethers due to both of our families extending. I think I had 6 total this year. Whew! My new niece Haley spent her first Christmas with us this year. She's teething right now so it's so comical watching her open up her gifts and stuff the paper in her mouth and chew on it, hahaha!

Fantastic Christmas, great year of family, friends, pies and SNOOOOW on the ground!
Merry Christmas from Haley herself :)

How it feels to be a teenager..

Believe it or not, I thought about my blog a few weeks ago. I was laying down in bed, under my down comforter that I love to get under during cold winters, my cup of Cinnamon Twirl coffee on my nightstand and a book in my lap and I kept thinking was how I was wanting to write something. The holidays are up, Christmas is my all time favorite holiday. And for so many reasons. However, all I could think about was how it feels to be a teenager.

As I've told you once before, I took on the challenge of being FCA Sponsor of the school I teach at. I felt like it was something that was laid on my heart as soon as I got hired to teach at Perry County. It all went smoothly at the beginning of the year. I gave out applications for leaders, "interviewed them", got references among other teachers and chose 6 great students to be the officers for the school year. Everything was peachy....

One officer (not saying names for the sake of the student) I know extremely well. She was in my very first class as a full time teacher here. I guess you could say we're pretty close as far as our teacher-student relationship. I think very highly of this girl- except her attitude. I always see to hear bad language slip out of her mouth, and I hear that she will gossip heavily whenever she's in class. All I think of is "She's supposed to be an example..."

I've called her out a few times on these things. Just reminding her that she is being watched and that she needs to be aware of her actions. She's really a great student. Sweet, creative, smart, fun, outgoing, respectful to teachers. That's why it makes my skin crawl when I see such foul actions come from a nice person.

And then all hell breaks loose.......

The other day, she bumped into a girl she was having issues with. Instead of walking away from snide remarks she turns around and shouts at the top of her lungs, right in the middle of the hallway at school...

"__________ IS A SKANKY WHORE!!!!"

When I got the notice that she was being put in detention for that behavior, I had no idea how to handle it. Finally, I walked over to the detention room and pulled her out for a chat. As nicely as I could, I told her that when she is a leader I expect a certain behavior from leaders. Since this was her numerous time acting out of line, and though will always be welcome to be active in FCA, she could no longer be a leader.

She looks down at the ground and bursts into tears.

And then it comes back to me. Just how it feels to be a teenager, like everything on Earth is falling down on your shoulders and there is not a single soul in the world who knows how you feel or what you're going through. How you try so hard every single day to be the best human being you could be and yet there is always someone there to tear you down as you are just being built up. How it feels like the world will just end if you do not get this group of people to hang out with you or get the guy of your dreams to ask you to prom. All of those feelings came back to me in that moment.

I had a good long heart to heart talk with her, letting her know that she doesn't need to beat herself up and that everybody screws up. But in the end, you are still going to have consequences for her actions and these were some she was just going to have to experience. It broke my heart to no end that I "demoted" her from her leadership position and even now I still feel terrible. Nevertheless, I know it's the right thing to do in the end.

God, thank you for that student and for showing me again what it was like to be a teenager. Now I feel like I can relate to them and reach out that much more.

My first field trip

Yesterday I took my first group of students to the Renaissance Art Center in Dickson, TN for a field trip. We viewed the high school student exhibit and participated in an Op Art workshop held by one of the instructors. This was actually my first time every coming to the center and it was SO much more enjoyable than I was anticipating. Being in a small rural area, you don't really know what you're gonna get or expect when you come to one of these small art centers especially being used to living in Nashville area and seeing all these grand museums. I was incredibly pleased with this place, the people were fabulous to work with, the price was very reasonable and I had BLAST with my group of kids.
I took a total amount of 19 students and they were angels. Everywhere I looked, people were complimenting me on how wonderful their behavior was, how intelligent they were and how pleasing it was to see them get excited about art. It made my day! Afterwards, we drove down the road and ate at Cracker Barrel. Here's just a few snapshots of the trip:

Freaking loved the christmas tree!

James, Christian and RJ looking very enlightened.

Lauren, Farrah and I were converse triplets :)

Sweet Courtney and myself!

At our workshop...

The journey towards fitness

So I've started a vigorous workout routine to get myself in shape. I honestly think I will be able to stick with this because Matt is doing the Insanity workout program (God bless him!). Since he will be busy with a program, I will be able to keep myself accountable on doing my own. He was sweet enough to lend me his P90X workout DVDs which I've started already.

My plan is to do a P90X Workout on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I'm being a cheater and not doing ALL the work outs. Hate to say it but I'm not a fan of the weight lifting. It's never really been my thing and plus I'm not looking to get ripped. I'm just looking to slim down and tone up. So that being said the workouts I will be doing are Kenpo X (which is a WHOLE lot of fun!), Cardio X, Ab Ripper X. I will also be doing Jillian Michaels Burn Fat Boost Metabolism since it's really similar to the cardio circuits of P90X, and also Yoga Meltdown. Those days will be focused obviously on fat shedding and cardio. Tuesdays and Wednesdays I'm going to be doing pilates. I LOVE pilates. It's a good thing to do if you feel you're incredibly sore to jump around but it's very challenging and helps tone you up :)

I'm on day 3 of my work out plan!! Can't wait to see results!

Origami in Art 2

I've decided to begin an origami unit with my Art 2 kids. I dearly wish someone told me this one thing before I started....

Teaching origami is HARD WORK. And it is quite exhausting. However, the kids really enjoy it and I love teaching things that they have enjoyed :) So far we have learned how to make:

Water Balloon Boxes (they LOVED these)
Flapping Birds
Cranes (though I accidentally taught them how to do it the wrong way-- they turned out upside down)
Samurai Hats
Jumping Frogs
Penguins
Exploding Envelopes
Blinking eyes

I've noticed that any model that "moves" is what interests them the most. And I'm still coming up with a fun independent project for them to do... we shall see what I can come up with. :)

In the end.. this is what teaching is all about :)

Tim for a very...very....long update.

As you can probably gather to yourself, life has kept me very busy.. A lot has been happening! Perry County decided to give me a new class to teach this semester- Art 2. I was incredibly excited to start I did not even fathom just how much WORK it would be to teach a whole new class. The good thing about Art 1 is that I've already taught it to 6 different classes last year, so I already know each project I will do, what worksheet I will assign, what the quizzes look like, etc. I had to completely start from scratch with Art 2. Sad to say, I didn't put as much thought into it as I would have liked. Bad teacher. The Lord has blessed me with OUTSTANDING students in Art 2. I have zero discipline problems, each student is incredibly creative and smart and my favorite of all- they've been very patient with me. I enjoy teaching but it's always great when I learn from my students.

Here's just a collection of art work they've done. I wanted to focus mostly on different mediums since we mostly stick with drawing and collages in Art 1. We started off with learning about the grid technique (which they mumbled and grumbled about for days-- however, it is quite boring), then we jumped into drawing with drawing still lives with graphite and oil pastels. AND THEN we drew out advertisement posters in the style of Art Nouveau. Now this project I loved----

Speaking of school, I'm finally getting the kick of of my two clubs- Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Art Club. I'm praying deeply everyday for FCA. We've been running through a lot of problems with the administration not letting us meet ever week causing us to have a lot of date conflicts with our members. However, I know that God is bigger than any problems my administration can give us. I'm believing our group will prosper no matter if we have 30 members or 3. It's about not counting the numbers but making the numbers count. As far as my art club goes, I have never seen a group of kids so excited and enthusiastic about art. They're hearts are so big. We will be taking a field trip next Friday to Dickson, TN for a painting workshop. Many pictures to come. :)

My sister got married on September 18, 2010. It was such a tiring and OVERWHELMING day. But I will always remember it! She was a gorgeous bride and it was nice to see everyone get together for our family's first wedding!

One amazing thing, Matt and I have found Love and Truth Church in Jackson, TN. I absolutely love it there and have just completed the membership classes to be involved in the ministry. God has something big planned here for us and I can not wait to spend more time here. Every time I walk through the doors on Sunday, Pastor Eddie speaks encouraging and truthful words that are ALWAYS aligned with the season I'm in. I will definitely be getting more involved. Can't wait to come back and tell more about life. So far... it's been pretty phenomenal.

A "Fruitful" Summer

So it's been a while....

I will be honest, I was having high hopes for this summer. I was expecting such a wonderful, fun-filled, neverending blasty summer after a long and hard working school year. Starting off, that was NOT the case. Matt was on a constant job hunt, working night shifts to build his savings and then got a second job as a graphic designer during the day time (which I thank God for!) and for the first month and a half I hardly ever got to see him. :( It was quite rough, because I wanted to finally have time in the year to be around him and my friends and not spend so much time at the apartment by myself.

Nevertheless, I've found ways to keep myself entertained. I got the opportunity to attend FCA Camp in a place called Lake Junaluska in North Carolina. Our regional representative, Ben Gooch, and I went to UTMartin together so we know each other very well. He found out that I has been chosen to lead FCA this upcoming school year and jumped on the opportunity to get me at camp to get me prepared for the year. I prayed about it long and hard and felt the Lord tugging me to go. I got two students from my FCA group to go with me, Alyssa and Erin. We got on the bus in Columbia, TN on June 28th and had NO idea what to expect. We ended up traveling with the high schools from our region such as Lawrence County, Maury County, Lewis County, and so many others. I could not have asked to travel with such an amazing group of kids! They were all truly blessings to me...

We arrived at the campsite, and this place was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Lake Junaluska is unlike any conference center I have been to, not only was it that but it looked like a tiny vacation resort for families and older couples. It felt like a small-town community smack dab in the middle of a lake surrounding the mountains. Absolutely stunning....

FCA is an outreach for high schoolers using the tools of sports and athletics. So camp for the students was incredibly active. They would get up in the morning and compete in games against all their huddles and then they would have devotions and quiet times before lunch, then we would break up and have our "break out sessions" where they did leadership and evangelism training, had seminars on outreach and fundraising ideas, etc. It was so informal... and they were answering a lot of questions I already had. But the best part of the entire week were the evening services. Watching all the students praise and worship God, giving their lives to him is what brought me to my knees. I can't even really explain all of my experience here but it was so moving and it was on purpose that I was drawn there for the summer. Now I can not wait to start school for the year and share my experiences with all the students. It's going to be an awesome fruitful year.

New prints.

Thankfully, my new body of art work is coming along quite nicely. I've been on a great roll with coming up with compositions for portraits and for the most part, they have all turned out looking great! Finally, I am starting to have a body of work I am extremely pleased with, and that is a HUGE thing for artists.

Let me talk about the titles. Titles are probably the thing I have the most trouble with, simply because it can make or break a piece. The worst thing in the world is looking at a very successful piece of art and the title is incredibly generic. It honestly changes my look on the piece. With this new body of work, I wanted to focus on the identity you can find in the portrait of someone. Which is why I chose to do portraits of my friends, because I know what types of personalities and energies I am working with. I like for titles to be simple but describe the subjects well.

I decided to name the prints based off of a certain characteristic that the subject carries. These examples shown below are portraits of my friends Keirstin and Erica. The title of Erica's print is "The Latina" because it elaborates on her heritage as Peurto Rican woman.

The finished print. These are 18 x 18.

Now onto Keirstin's portrait.

The image taken from. I adore this picture, it describes her to a tee- on her iPone with her pet goat!!!

Here are the finished prints, these are quite smaller- 9 x 12.

I have uploaded these onto my site by the way, check out the rest!

Trying something new...

Something I decided I was going to devote my summer to is to build my body of art work. I have not created hardly a single thing this past school year due to my busy business (sorry I'm a DORK lol). I'm making a goal to build my gallery experience and try to have a lot of shows this upcoming few months/year. In order to do that you have to have a number of GOOD pieces. I'm working on a series of lino portrait prints but my supplies had not come in yet--- so I decided to make a collage of my sister, Heather :) The image on the left is what I looked at for my inspiration.

I went out and bought some scrapbooking paper, rubber cement and an x-acto knife (which was PINK, may I add. Totally pimp! :))

Starting to cut all the colored shapes... realizing that it is going to be a LONG night.

6 1/2 hours later..... pushing down each individual colored piece of paper....

Here's how it looks so far.... needs more work, but I'm pretty happy so far :)

The Changing of Desires

This afternoon I was in the car driving to Jackson to pick up some art supplies at Hobby Lobby. As I drive, I often reflect. Reflect on my job, my health, my goals, my relationships, my trials... I think that's why I love to drive so much, lol. And then I began to think about all of the desires of my life. I graduated college just a tad over a year ago and thought of what my desires where at that time. They were the usual from a college graduate. i wanted to get a teaching job, make money, find a place to live, become financially stable, all the good stuff.

God really REALLY took care of me when I graduated. This job at PCHS just literally popped up out of the blue and landed in my lap. My apartment which is incredibly nice and I absolutely love fell into my lap at an amazing monthly price where I can live comfortably and still save money. However, as good as these things where I didn't find it to be the desire I intended for. My desire was to live in a big city such as Murfreesboro, Hendersonville or Nashville. I really dreaded the idea of being stuck in a big city. AND I was not thrilled about teaching high school, I really had a desire to teach the younger ages.

I have completely fallen in love with working with teenagers. The Lord has put in my heart a desire to work with high schoolers in such a pure and loving way. I love everything about teenagers- their personalities, their energy, their outlook on life and how they all have the world at their fingertips. And just recently, another opportunity has fallen into my lap. To be the FCA sponsor of the school. This idea scared the life out of me, as much as I adore the Lord and going to church and working with others, there was no way I felt equipped to be a spiritual mentor to these students.

And then just last week, I got a phone call from a college friend I have not heard from in years, Ben. It was kind of a shocker that he called me, I was quite curious as to what he was doing in life and what made him call me. APPARENTLY... he is now the FCA Representative for West Tennessee. His job is to work with all of the Huddle Leaders in the school systems, come and speak to the students and publicize all of these events that they are having. This completely FLOORED ME. I had no idea one of my friends from COLLEGE happened to be the FCA Rep that I needed to talk to for being prepared to lead FCA during the school year. He was so happy and excited that I was going to be a new Huddle Leader and immediately invited me to this summer leadership FCA Camp they are having in North Carolina at the end of June. They have praise and worship, games, team and leadership building, small group studies... so many things that I know will help me prepare my heart and mind as a Huddle Leader.

I am so excited for what God is doing in my life right now, it just feels like he is having 100% control over my life and he is steering it in the way He wants for His glory. And I thank God that my desires have been changing to His desires.

I've been saying all this year that I can't wait to pack up and move closer to Nashville... But as of right now, I am totally happy about what He is doing in my life right here.

My new way of eating

One of my constant struggles is to stay fit. I've put on a good thirty pounds since college and it has been such a hard fight to get it off. I've put it on and lost it several times, I try to keep myself active by working out and doing yoga (my absolute favorite!) but in the end it never helps like it should. After a lot of reflecting I realized it's my inconsistent diet. I will eat well for about two weeks and then for a few days go back to my fast food and drinking cokes fringe. This has really kept me from getting in the shape I desire. I found this plan on google that sounded like so much fun.

It's called the Color Diet. All you do is make your plate as colorful as you can. If you think about it, all the healthy and good food is almost always colorful. Examples are fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges, strawberries, blue berries. Then you got veggies which are colors in carrots, lettuce, spinach, peas, etc. The fattening food such as potatoes and starches don't have much of color. They are all bland looking, which would make it not a good choice to eat because of the lack of color.

I've been doing this for several days and it's been a lot of fun and you don't even realize you are eating healthy! Here is a list of food to choose from when you go grocery shopping and care to start the challenge with me:

sweet potatoes
dark green lettuce
tomatoes
avocados
peppers
(red, green, yellow, hot)
carrots
broccoli
celery
onions
garlic
alfalfa sprouts
olive oil
spinach
flax seed oil
green teanuts
beans
peas
sunflower seeds
wheat germ
soy
tofu
oatmeal
whole grains
(wheat
rye, etc.)
wild rice
yogurt
milk
cheese
eggssardines
and other small
cold water fish
low-mercury seafood
(eg: wild salmon
shrimp
light tuna
pollock
and catfish)
wild game (deer, pheasant, etc)
organic chicken
organic beef, sparingly
pork, sparingly

Printmaking in the morning...

My lovely total of four girls who are taking my summer printmaking class. We're doing linoleum printing right now, my favorite!!

Jerika (right) and Raquel (left) acting like girls while they work on their prints.

Raquel's print of a lion.

Dedra's print of the moon.

They are going to look SO good when they finish.

What do art teachers do over their summer vacations?

I thank Jesus that this school year has ended somewhat peacefully. It's been an incredibly tough year as a first year teacher: two suicides from students and 1 death of a student drowning in a flood. Definitely a lot of heart break. I've grown to really love my students, much more than I anticipated I would. I know I am going to have to pick up my stuff and move within a year or so. I find myself complaining about the town I live in (big and bad Parsons). It's on the middle of nowhere and there is nothing to do, and I have to drive a good 30 minutes to get to a near Wal-Mart....but I have a JOB. And not that, but I have a job I really enjoy with students I have become very close to over the years. It's not going to be easy leaving them, but I thank the Lord that he has brought sweet and wonderful students this year. I went to the graduation without kleenexes and regretted it instantly. I sobbed like a little girl. Up above is a picture of one of the FCA students, Tyler who left me :(

I have decided for my summer vacation, I wanted to earn a little extra money and also give me something to keep me busy with. SO.... I am teaching a printmaking and drawing class to a group of students I had this past semester. They are two and a half hours, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, throughout the month of June. We met yesterday for the first time and so far I have seen OUTSTANDING artwork from them. I can NOT wait to post them online when I take pictures :)

On a side note, I am in wedding season right now! My sister is getting married in September and one of my best friends is getting married next April. Guess who is the maid of honor in BOTH weddings! :) :) :) Wedding planning is such a blast, and I can not wait to plan my own.....

Speaking of weddings, ever heard of wedding band tattoos?? Any thoughts? I'm quite interested....

The search for a companion

Not a human companion. An animal companion, hahaha.

Over the past few months I have really pondered on the idea of buying a pet. Which in my case would more than likely be a dog. I like cats if they are boys, the girl cats tend to get a little too prissy for me. But overall I am a much bigger dog lover. Having a dog is one thing I looked forward to the most when getting my own place. However, I know they require a lot of time, effort, money and taking care of. One thing I have been debating is whether my lifestyle fits the atmosphere for a pet. I get quite bored at home after a while, I want to go out and do something or see someone. So I travel a lot. It's not good or fair to the animal if you leave them alone a lot. I also figure if I have another soul to come home to I may want to stay more hahahaha.

These are the dogs I am considering:

Scottish Terrier- This is probably a definitely wanna. I love Scotties so much they are the perfect size and they don't shed which is great! However, I have heard they aren't good with children, so if I got one I would surround it with people and kids.

Welch Corgi- These are so ADORABLE!

Wirefox Terrier- My grandmother has one named Trump. He is so sweet. He is a little bigger but he doesnt shed and he is very good with children. He is a barker however, which works well with being a guard dog but maybe not so much for sleeping haha.

Back in the saddle again.

I bought an 18" x 24" linoleum slab back last summer. SUMMER. I've been sketching a lot of ideas for my new body of art work to put in my portfolio. It's going to be a collection of prints of portraits- all of my friends. And each portrait will have character and personality that represents something based on that person's nature. I've carved on lots of linoleum slabs but none as big as 18 x 24". And to be honest I have been a little intimidated by it. It's so massive I've been afraid of messing it up- not to mention it was EXPENSIVE.

BUT I got up enough guts to sketch on it last night. So I did. Then I outlined it with a sharpie and colored in which layers would be where and get this. I CARVED IT. I'm no longer afraid of my slab of linoleum! It will take me several days to carve it out and start printing but it feels so wonderful to be in the process of making SOMETHING. Knowing that I am being productive and there is a peice of art work that is on its way to becoming accomplished. GO ME!

As far as the world of teaching goes....

I don't know what it is about this new group I got, but I have been extremely impressed with their art. When I say impressed I REALLY mean impressed. They are sooo creative and are all a bunch of risk takers. They're not afraid to stretch out and think of something different and go beyond what the basic requirements of their projects are. It's such a great thing to see... I love my students from last semester but I felt like they were intimidated real easily. I had to constantly encourage and motivate them to get started. With this group they just dive on in! I don't know if it is the new way I am managing my classroom or the students are just more artistically interested... whatever it is I am enjoying GREATLY.

We are finishing up our About Me collages, I can't wait to post them they are looking fantastic.

Also: I finished the website for my classroom. Go by and see what we're up to:

R.I.P Jack :(

One of my dogs at my parents' house had to be put down this last week.

His name was Jack and he was a mut. Mom and I found Jack on the side of the road when he was just a puppy. He looked like he was beaten up badly and had been abused. So being the saps of strays we were, we took him in. He had a variety of health problems. He had the mange disease along with a bad digestive system because he ate everything in sight. It got to where he was just in costant pain. So they put him to sleep. I cried for hours when Mom called and told me. I wanted to make it home in time to say goodbye to him but I was a day late.

He was such a happy and wonderful dog and he was 10 years old when he passed. We gave him such a great home while he was alive and had we not found him when he was a pup he would have had an even shorter life.

Love you, Jack!
